Role overview

We are seeking a dedicated Assistant Editor to manage the holistic handling of manuscripts from submission to decision. In this role, you will be the central point of contact for authors, reviewers, and internal stakeholders, ensuring a rigorous, efficient, and fair peer-review process. You will leverage your scientific expertise to evaluate research, make critical editorial decisions, and contribute to the growth and quality of Wiley journal portfolio, such as Advanced Science, Advanced Materials, and other Advanced journals, Angewandte Chemie, Chemistry Europe titles, Small, physical status solidi, Macromolecular titles.

Manuscript Handling & Peer Review

  • Conduct expert-level screening of new submissions to assess their suitability, scope, and integrity for the journal.
  • Make initial decisions on manuscripts and provide clear, constructive decision rationales in line with journal policy.
  • Proactively identify and raise potential integrity concerns through the appropriate channels.
  • Select, invite, and manage reviewers to obtain high-quality peer review reports.
  • Evaluate reviewer feedback to make well-reasoned decisions (Accept, Reject, Revise, Refer).
  • Assess revised manuscripts and author rebuttals to determine if changes are satisfactory or if further review is required.
  • Identify and recommend suitable alternative journals within our portfolio for rejected manuscripts that may be a better fit.

Content Commissioning & Development

  • Commission articles and special issues in alignment with strategic publishing goals.
  • Invite leading experts to contribute special content (e.g., reviews, commentaries).
  • Manage the pipeline for invited content, including sending reminders and tracking submissions.

Performance & Collaboration

  • Analyze performance reports to identify trends and opportunities for improving the peer review process.
  • Collaborate with senior editors and subject-area clusters to share knowledge and enhance personal and team performance.
  • Engage in ongoing training and development to master editorial systems and best practices.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant natural sciences field.
  • Postdoctoral research experience is highly desirable.
  • Currently, we are primarily looking for subject matter experts in: Engineering, Technology & Nanoscience (e.g., electronic devices, MEMS/NEMS, nano materials).
  • International research experience at a university or institute outside your home country is highly preferred.
  • A genuine passion for science communication and the ability to rapidly broaden your knowledge across related research disciplines.
  • A solid understanding of the scholarly publishing and peer-review process, gained through experience as an author, reviewer, or editor.

Training & Development

  • A commitment to staying current in your field by attending virtual and in-person scientific seminars and conferences.
  • Willingness to participate in peer-to-peer coaching and formal system training to ensure proficiency with all editorial tools and platforms.

  • It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
